Power outage affects thousands

ELKO — Thousands of residents in Spring Creek and part of Elko lost electrical service early Friday afternoon.

According to NV Energy, the power outage started at 1:26 p.m. in Spring Creek and in southern Elko. It affected 5,500 customers.

All but approximately 1,000 customers were restored at 2:08 p.m., and the remaining customers were restored at 2:37 p.m.

Company spokeswoman Faye Andersen said a wire on an above-ground line broke free and short circuited in southeast Elko.

“We also found some bad underground cable that runs under the river,” she said. Crews will run tests and resume work on it Monday.
